The emotional intelligence of the
financial sector

Data from 5,232 finance professionals, collected from 2004 to 2014, shows the sector scored slightly below other industries on emotional intelligence (EI), mainly on interpersonal skills, but improved over the decade.

What does emotional intelligence look like in finance?

The research found clear strengths, clear gaps and evidence that EI can be developed:

Strengths: Finance professionals were pragmatic, task-focused and goal-directed, and its leaders showed self-belief, authenticity and consistency.

Gaps: Scores were lower on interpersonal skills such as awareness of others, connecting with others, trust and conflict handling.

Trend: EI rose and fell broadly in line with the economy, and interpersonal scores improved by 2014.

Development: Among 189 leaders, about half from finance, EI scores rose 18% six months after a three-day training programme.
